ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Buildings and other structures ("the built environment") consume enormous quantities of finite natural resources during the construction and operational phases. Whether it is cement in the form of concrete for the structure or fossil fuel in the form of electricity to provide energy, environmental aspects play an important part in all built environment investments throughout the whole life cycle.

ENERGY & CLIMATE
The built environment accounts for approximately 40% of all energy consumption. About 1% of this is consumed during construction, 84% accounted for during the lifetime use and 15% is embedded in construction materials. Company sees its ability to provide enhanced energy efficiency as an important business opportunity.
We are developing a number of plans to take this forward with like-minded clients through product adaptation strategies. For example, energy consumption in Company Commercial Developments newly developed offices is 30- 40% less than in existing facilities. In addition, within Company we have embarked on a series of mitigation measures focused on our vehicles, heavy equipment and office facilities. These adaptation and mitigation measures are embedded more specifically in our future Business Plan.
Company's approach to addressing Energy & Climate opportunities and challenges is to focus on the things we can directly control and the things we can directly influence. During this 3-year Business Plan we are focusing on mitigating our own impacts and adapting our products and services to make them more climate benign.
Specifically we are focusing on:-

MATERIALS
Significant opportunities exist in construction to improve waste management and resource efficiency. Company is working on a series of initiatives to integrate improved material efficiency into its projects in line with the priorities set out in the Waste Hierarchy.
In addition, early adoption of the Precautionary Principle in some of our Business Units has influenced our approach to hazardous materials. This in turn has improved our risk management and reduced unnecessary exposure of our workforce and the general public to chemicals that in the future may be banned or less favored. Our central Purchasing Unit includes appropriate screening in its procurement.

BIODIVERSITY
Our most important impacts and opportunities to protect biological diversity (biodiversity) are through our supply chain and our large civil engineering projects.
At least 40 per cent of the worlds economy and 80 per cent of the needs of the poor are derived from biological resources. In addition, the richer the diversity of life, the greater the opportunity for medical discoveries, economic development, and adaptive responses to such new challenges as climate change.
We have begun to explore the biodiversity risks and opportunities inherent in the sourcing of quarry products for our projects and biofuels for our vehicles. Conclusions and subsequent actions will be communicated as they arise.
With regard to large civil projects, appropriate Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) must be addressed and Land Management Plans prepared that reflect the risks and opportunities.

LOCAL IMPACT
Construction is essentially a local activity. Therefore, it is vitally important to have sound controls in place to manage common issues such as dust, noise, run-off, light pollution, hydrocarbon contamination and increased transport.
Incidents can result in unnecessary nuisance for local stakeholders. Sustained poor performance can damage or even cancel our License to Operate. Sustained good performance can enhance our reputation and License to Operate.
